Planting during these seasons provides azaleas with ample time to establish their root systems before the stress of the growing season. Additionally, planting during the early fall allows the azaleas to benefit from the cooler temperatures and increased rainfall.

Choosing the Right Location

Selecting an appropriate location is crucial for the success of azaleas in clay soil. Azaleas prefer well-drained soil, so if your soil is thick clay, you could consider creating a raised bed to improve drainage. It’s a bit of a workaround, but I assure you, it will help your plants in the long run. If planting at ground level, ensure good drainage by amending the soil with organic material. Azaleas generally thrive in full sun to partial shade, but the exact requirements may vary depending on the specific variety, so I would suggest having a chat at your local garden centre when you are buying your azaleas

Creating a Planting Hole

When planting azaleas, dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball’s height. This ensures that the azalea is not planted too deeply, which can lead to root rot. Before placing the azalea in the hole, mix the native soil with organic material such as peat moss or well-rotted compost.
