June is a very pleasant month in the garden. It’s usually a lot warmer and there are many more plants flowering in the garden. It can be a time to relax and enjoy your hard work so far, but it’s also a time to get cracking on some of the ideas around what to plant in June as you can reap the rewards later on in the year.

What To Plant in June

Calendula

Calendula are not only a very pretty flower to add to your garden, they have several uses too. They will draw aphids away from your vegetables, so are a wonderful addition to your vegetable garden. If you like to use edible flowers in your cooking, then Calendula is a great choice. The flowers have a slightly spicy flavour and are great for adding a saffron-like flavour to your dishes. So all in all Calendula are a smart choice when considering what flowers to plant in June. You can sow the seeds directly outside in early June.

Lupins

When thinking about what seeds to sow in June for flowers, Lupins should be at the top of the list. Although June is the last chance to sow these gorgeous flowers and you’ll need to check the variety of lupin if you are planting late. The seeds will be more likely to germinate if you soak them first.

Due to the height of most Lupins, you’ll need to think carefully about where to position them. They will need a more sheltered position, but they will do well in either full sun or dappled shade, so hopefully you have a nice spot for them.

What To Plant in June

Delphiniums

Delphiniums are a good choice when thinking about what to plant in June. They are a bit fussy about their weather, so planting later, could see them fair better. They like to be kept moist and slightly cooler, so think about that when positioning your delphiniums.

Delphiniums are a little more hard work than other flowers, but they are well worth the effort. Some varieties can grow up to 2 metres high and the colours look stunning. You’ll need to make sure they have good drainage and you’ll need to stake them as they grow unless you are growing dwarf delphiniums. They will do well with a regular high potash feed. These are very rewarding flowers to grow in your garden.

Beetroot

As mentioned in my post about the best vegetables to grow for beginners, beetroot is quick and easy to grow. It’s not something you can only sow in June, you can continually sow it throughout spring and into late summer to ensure you get a regular harvest. Beetroot is normally ready to harvest around 7 – 8 weeks from sowing, so it’s perfect if you want something that will go from seed to harvest quickly and easily.

What Vegetables To Plant in June

Lettuce

There are lots of lettuce varieties that you can choose when you are thinking about what to sow in June. Like beetroot, you can plant lettuce seeds regularly in the spring and summer, that way you can ensure you’ll get regular harvests of salad throughout the summer. One of my personal favourites is the little gem lettuce. The seedlings appear really quickly and once fully grown, they taste sweet and delicious.

Dwarf Beans

Dwarf beans are an excellent idea when considering what vegetables to plant in June as you can sow these directly outside this month. It’ll be best to use soil that has been warmed, so pick a sunny spot. Sow the beans around 9 inches apart and keep them well watered. Once they start to grow, you are best to pick the pods whilst they are quite young as this will give the best flavour.

Sweetcorn

This is a great one to sow directly outside in June if you didn’t get a chance to start it off inside in May. Sweetcorn needs to be sown or planted out in blocks as it is pollinated by the wind. If you plant in a single row, it’s unlikely that you will get your plants pollinated so you won’t get as much from your sweetcorn harvest as you would like.

So here are just a few ideas on what to plant in June. I’d love to hear what you are sowing this month or what your recommendations are for vegetables to grow in June. It’s such an exciting month for gardeners, there’s so much going on in the garden in June, so enjoy your time in your space and share what’s going in your ground and beds.
