November is a less favoured month for gardeners. The length of sunlight is rapidly decreasing day by day and, depending on where you live, you might be getting the first of the winter’s frosts. There are still quite a few tasks to be getting on with in the garden, so if you are looking at what to plant in November, I have a few ideas to get you started.

What To Plant in November

Tulips

If you are thinking about what flowers to plant in November, then tulips are a good answer. They won’t pop up until the springtime, but you’ll want to plant them now so that you can enjoy their show of colour once the warmer weather starts to return. You can either plant in borders or pots. Miniature versions work particularly well in pots. If you are looking at planting bulbs in your grassy areas, you might want to think about using a bulb planter which will make cutting through the turf much easier and more time-effective.

What To Grow in November

Alliums

Alliums look stunning when they flower and the bumblebees love them, so it’s well worth planting some Allium bulbs in November. They like to be planted quite deep – around 4 times the depth of the bulbs and they prefer a sunny spot, so think about where you are going to plant them when you considering what flowers to plant in November.

Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas are a great one to consider when you are looking at what to sow in November. Lots of people start now for the earlier show of sweet peas, so if you find your green-fingers are itching, why not get your sweet peas off to a great start. I like to germinate mine in a toilet roll. I’ve got lots of tips right here on how to grow sweet peas, but you are best to start them off somewhere with lots of light, but not too warm.

Roses

If you want to add some roses to your garden, November is the right time to start thinking about this. There’s no rush though. You can plant bare-root roses any time between November and March, but if you are thinking about what to plant in November, why not pop to the garden centre this month and see what they have in stock.

What To Plant in November

Hellebores

This is one of the few plants that will flower over the wintertime. You can plant them in the winter months as long as the ground isn’t frozen. It’s worth choosing your site wisely as Hellebores aren’t keen on being moved around the garden. A nice spot at the edge of a border will do them nicely. Although they aren’t fussy and will grow almost anywhere in the garden.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of my favourite fruits to grow. And these are ideal if you are looking at what to plant in November. Blueberries prefer acidic soil, so if your garden isn’t the right composition, you can easily grow your blueberries in pots with some ericaceous compost. I’ve got a detailed post about how to grow blueberries, so if you are considering growing them, pop over for a read.

Herbs

If you are fortunate enough to have a heated greenhouse and are thinking about what seeds to sow in November, you could look to sow some herbs over the winter months. Dill or chives will do well in this environment. If you don’t have a heated greenhouse, you use a sunny windowsill and the herbs should do well here too.

Winter Gem

If you don’t have a heated greenhouse and yours is unheated, don’t fret, there’s still plenty you can plant in November. One of my favourites is the winter gem lettuce. It grows quickly and is very tasty. If you don’t have a greenhouse at all, you could try growing winter gem lettuce under cloches to protect them from the elements.

Blackberries

November is a great time to get started with blackberries if you are thinking about what to plant in November. You’ll need to choose where you plant them and put a support system in place for when they start to grow, but they are a great fruit to get cracking on with this month. Here’s a detailed post on how to grow blackberries.

Strawberries

These are another fruit that you can get started with this month. If you’ve grown strawberry plants in the previous year, you may find you have a few runners which you can plant out where you want them, ready for them to grow and fruit the following summer. If you want to know more about how to grow strawberries, I’ve put together a detailed post all about it.

What To Plant in March,

Is November a busy time in the garden for you? Or is it more a case of just tidying up from the summer? Will you be planting anything new this month?
